The Magnum 8.1 fits into our all mountain range in the 'medium width' category. When we are seeking the 'one ski quiver' for our customers, this width range is where we'll start the discussion for most of them. The Mag. 8.1 is on the stiffer side of the range and is among the narrower skis in this category. Like the 8.7, the 8.1 has a high level of torsional stiffness. As a result, we rate this model as having a pretty strong bias towards hard snow vs. soft, and an ability range that leans toward stronger skiers. There was a period in Tahoe last winter when it didn't snow but for an occasional sprinkle for almost six weeks. I had a Mag 8.7 and an 8.1 in my personal quiver for part of last season and I skied them quite a bit during that period. Although I skied over 20 different skis during that time, the Mag 8.1 was my favorite from a purely hard snow performance standpoint. One cold, windy day in January particularly stands out as a day where I had both with me and the Magnums shone especially brightly. I got to Sugar Bowl pretty early that day because it had spit a few inches of snow overnight. I started that day on the 8.7 and pretty much covered the whole mountain. Later in the day I switched to the 8.1. On the groomers, the little skiff of new snow had been skied back down to the shiny 'snow' underneath. The difference in the edge to edge quickness and energy was immediately noticeable. The 8.1 felt substantially quicker edge to edge than the 8.7 and quick turns in a narrow corridor were easier. Although the 8.7 has very good grip for this category, the 8.1 is even better. When I took the 8.1 into the same off trail chutes that I had skied earlier in the day, the 8.1 was maneuverable and quick but it is just stiff enough that larger bumps wanted to throw me a bit if I was not on my game. The extra grip of the 8.1 makes it a little less forgiving than the 8.7 in the chalky wind scoured conditions in the off trail. The 8.1 handled the piles of shaved off snow near the edges of the trails and also the few bits of untracked wind blown snow very well considering the width. The 8.1 is a superb choice for the western skier as a groomer zoomer with a little off trail capability. For the Eastern guy, it could well be the #1 choice as a wider carver.
