Sidecut: 132-109-122 Turn Radius: 41m @ 194 Category: Specialty Wide
The XXL evolved from the lineage of the “Pro Rider” and has some of the same features. While the “Pro” has been tweaked to make it more manageable for mere expert skiers, the XXL has remained true to the concept of being a ski for big mountain professionals. This is a wide, stiff and fairly heavy ski with a 41m turn radius in the 194 and 37m in the 187. These skis have the natural turning radius of Super G and Downhill skis but of course are not as stiff as speed skis. Having said all that scary stuff, I have to say that the XXL is pretty fun even for a guy like me that is NOT a big mountain pro. Just last week, I was skiing the 187 XXL @ Mammoth in 18-20” of mixed powder and light crud. Surprisingly, this big ski came around pretty well. I did have to ski it faster than lesser skis to get the same turn out of it but the XXL really smoothed out the thick and rough snow like no other ski I’ve been on. Making quick turns in and out of the scrubby, stunted trees near timberline took some effort but it was doable. When I got out of the powder and onto the heavily chopped and cruddy groomers, the XXL rode right over the rough stuff like it wasn’t even there. We classify the XXL as a specialty ski not because of some odd shape or camber concept but simply because not very many skiers would choose to ski this powerhouse everyday. For those that would, there is nothing like it.
